Why do you include the preservative Ethoxyquin in your Tropical Flakes fish food?

We include this preservative to ensure a stable shelf life of 2.5 to 3 years. Studies have shown that this ingredient prevents rancidity while being harmless to fish, which is beneficial as the consequences of rancidity are of greater concern.

Is there a benefit to feeding fish food pellets when I am already feeding a flake food?

Yes, sinking pellets are beneficial particularly if your aquarium contains bottom feeders. Additionally, the nutritional density of pellets is higher, making it easier to regulate feedings and control quantity. Pellets are also a superior choice for automatic fish feeders. In general, providing a varied diet is beneficial to most aquarium fish as you are providing a greater range of nutrition.

I feed Cichlid food on occasion to my community tank. Is this okay for Tetras and other tropical fish?

Yes, Fluval Cichlid foods are perfectly safe and are beneficial to feed to all tropical fish.

Why do the Tropical Fish flakes break down easily?

Flake foods that are free of fillers and other low value ingredients tend to be delicate by nature. Fluval Premium fish foods include over 60% high value proteins, making them highly palatable to all fish.

What other foods can I feed my betta?

You should vary your betta’s diet with frozen shrimp, frozen glassworms, frozen bloodworms and color enhancing flakes. In fact, Fluval Color Enhancing Flakes include 25% krill, an excellent palatability enhancer that also dramatically improves fish colors.

Why are Fluval pellet fish foods of the sinking kind?

Fluval pellet foods sink because it is the most effective way to feed all fish. Surface feeders have plenty of opportunity to feed on the pellets as they fall, while bottom feeders are better able to feed on those that sink all the way down.

How often and when should I feed my fish?

What feeding tips can you offer to new hobbyists?

My fish food is slightly past the best before date. Should I throw it out?

A few vitamins may be less present at that time, however, you can feed off the balance of the food shortly thereafter (within 2 months). We recommend feeding within the expiry date to ensure maximum freshness and nutritional value.

Why aren’t my fish eating pellets as intently as the flakes I used to feed them?

You can expect a few days to weeks until some fish consume the pellets with the same vigor as they did when fed flakes. Like most animals, a change in food format may require an adjustment period.

Does Fluval offer sinking tablets for bottom feeding fish?

Although there is no tablet format, Fluval offers sinking pellets and sticks that are available in various sizes. In fact, by spreading out a few pellets into your aquarium, you are achieving a better distribution of food, making it more available to all the fish.

What ingredient(s) in Fluval’s Color Enhancing formula actually help enhance fish colors?

Fluval Color Enhancing formula includes a high dose of Krill, which is highly palatable and a natural color-enhancer for fish.

My fish seem to be hungry shortly after feeding them. Should I add more food?

No. For active species, feed them a little less per meal and add feeding periods during the day. For example, feed them three times a day and observe their stomachs. Slightly curved bellies is ideal.

My young child ate your fish food. Is this dangerous?

Fluval fish foods are not meant for human consumption. That said, allergic reactions to various ingredients are a potential risk for any food, human grade or not. While being a safe food, we strongly recommend storing your fish food out of the reach of any young children, and contacting your local health professional for further guidance.

Why do you recommend feeding fish without using your fingers?

Using the bottle cap method to feed fish will help control portions and prevent overfeeding. Fingers should not come into contact with the food, which can potentially contaminate it due to the bacteria, oils, creams, etc. often found on our hands.
